Asclepiad Paintings by Hans-Jürgen R. Thorwarth

The Artist

Hans-Jürgen R. Thorwarth was born in Germany in 1946. He completed a vocational training as a
ceramist in the field of decoration at the porcelain factory in Colditz (Saxony, Germany). Thereafter he studied at the technical professional school for advertising and design in Berlin for 3 years. In 1970 Hans-Jürgen graduated in Design with the specialization "Designer for Science and Engineering".

Since then he worked at the University of Leipzig in the section of animal production and veterinary medicine for seven years and later at the Natural History Museum of Leipzig for nearly 20 years.

Hans-Jürgen’s passion are succulent plants, and he has pursued it not only through collecting but painting with them, too. He works both in pen drawings and watercolours, and many paintings of cacti and other succulents were produced by him over the years. All reflect his love of art and succulents and show a keen attention to detail.

The artist’s life-like drawings have been extensively published in various botanical journals such as the South African "Aloe", the Danish magazine "Kaktus", the "British Cactus and Succulent Journal", the Australian "Asran", and last but not least in the German "Avonia", the former "Informationsheft die anderen Sukkulenten" of the "Fachgesellschaft andere Sukkulenten – FgaS" (German society for the other succulents).

Hans-Jürgen’s fine pen drawings can also be admired in plant catalogues of the well-known German nursery Kakteen-Haage. A particular mention deserve his precise pen drawings published in Ingo Breuer’s "The World of Haworthias (Vol. 1)" and "The World of Haworthias (Vol. 2)".
